At MPO we work with our customers to determine the most suitable optical coatings for their specific applications. With decades of experience and an intimate knowledge of thin film design, and more importantly of applications, we produce high quality custom-made optical coatings to meet the specific needs of our customers. Depending on the product and application we use either, E-beam, ion-assisted deposition (IAD) or magnetron-sputtered coating processes.

Repeatability and consistency

At MPO we understand repeatability and consistency of processes. With our wealth of experience we ensure we operate our coating chambers to ensure repeatability, accuracy, uniformity and control, and only use the best materials and equipment. This means we can achieve very tight tolerances, spectral performance and very high damage thresholds.

Material selection

We select coating materials depending on a number of key parameters that will ensure we meet your LIDT, stress, scatter, environment and spectral performance.

We utilise numerous materials in our optical coatings covering a large range of refractive indices. These materials are well suited for the ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared (NIR) bandwidths with low dispersion and negligible absorption.

High laser-induced damage threshold

In any high-power laser system the ability to withstand intense energy pulses is paramount. This resilience, known as laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), dictates the point at which a component is susceptible to failure. At the heart of our expertise lies a deep understanding of LIDT, enabling us to fabricate optics that excel in this crucial aspect.

As the power and versatility of high-energy lasers continue to expand, so too does the demand for optics that can withstand these advancements At MPO we recognize this evolution and are committed to staying ahead of the curve, striving to develop new designs and coating processes that push the boundaries of what is achievable. Our commitment to pushing the boundaries of LIDT ensures that our optics not only deliver exceptional performance but also boast extended lifespans.

This unwavering pursuit of excellence has led us to establish ourselves as a trusted partner for those seeking the highest standards in laser optics. Our dedication to innovation and our mastery of LIDT provide the foundation for creating optics that empower the next generation of high-power laser applications.

Metal and metal-hybrid mirrors

MPO also specialises in low group delay dispersion (GDD <50 fs2 and less) thin film dielectric, metal and metal-hybrid mirrors. The metal and metal-hybrid mirrors are coated from a range of materials from gold (Au) to silver (Ag) to aluminium (Al) and are ideal as highly reflective mirrors for ultra-short pulse infrared lasers. We also take the step of giving our metal and metal hybrid mirrors robust oxide-based overcoats to prevent tarnishing or damage to the soft metals beneath. Our metal-hybrid mirrors are designed with a high LIDT in mind while offering a very broad reflectivity bandwidth with a low GDD.

In addition to following an exacting process using the most appropriate technology, coating performance, longevity and high LIDT are also assured by sourcing our materials from reliable and well-established suppliers. In this way we control the consistency and purity of the coating materials and avoid the introduction of impurities into the process.
